Mr. James Smith

James Smith is the Band Director at Richland School, where he leads the school’s instrumental music program( Marching Band, Middle School Band, and High School Band), teaches Music Appreciation, and Class Guitar. With over 11 years of experience in education, Mr. Smith has taught everything from elementary general music to high school choir, giving him a well-rounded perspective on the musical journey from beginner to advanced performer.

Mr. Smith studied at Jacksonville State University, earning a degree in Music Education with concentrations in both Instrumental and Vocal/Choral music. His diverse training enables him to work confidently across multiple musical disciplines, from directing concert bands to conducting choirs and leading guitar classes.

At Richland School, Mr. Smith is committed to building a vibrant, inclusive, and high-achieving music program that instills discipline, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts.

Outside the classroom, Mr. Smith enjoys playing board games with his family and is a proud member of the Rebel Legion, a Star Wars costuming group dedicated to charity work. Through the Rebel Legion, he participates in events that bring joy to children’s hospitals, sporting events, and community celebrations.
